A high quality canvas print of this beautiful Red Deer Stag captured in Windsor Great Park, Berkshire, UK.
The 300 strong herd of Red Deer are resident in the Deer Park adjacent to the Long Walk. The Long Walk stretches from the gates of Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse Statue of the Duke of York. The current deer herd was established from two stags and 40 hinds. These were originally transported from the Balmoral Estate in Scotland and were introduced in 1979 by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh.
I took this picture early one morning in 2015. I had walked the Long Walk before dawn, aiming to capture some sunrise pictures. On my way back, I noticed this herd of deer in the woods off to one side. I approached cautiously and this majestic Red Deer Stag stopped and stared right at me. As I waited, unmoving, the entire herd of hundreds of deer walked past the Red Deer Stag and across the path to the other side of the woods. This Red Deer Stag held my gaze all the time, then once the last deer had passed, he dropped his head and followed them across the Long Walk and into the woods. It is a moment I will never forget, a beautiful animal protecting the herd.
